Harvard?s Laboratory for Integrated Science and Engineering
At Harvard?s LISE the team achieved a high specification laboratory in a very complex EMI environment to support research in applied physics, mechanical engineering and material sciences
In Rafael Moneo?s design for Harvard?s Laboratory for Integrated Science and Engineering (LISE) there were major issues with powerful magnets located inside the research facility which resulted in an incompatibility with other sensitive research tools. CEI undertook a large-scale modelling project and resultant shielding to achieve manufacturer?s environmental specifications.
The building contains 10 imaging suites which will house a variety of advanced SEM and TEM instruments. The AC magnetic field background specification was 0.1 ?T and the three imaging suites had more stringent requirements of 0.01 ?T and 0.05 ?T. Unfortunately all of the microscope suites were located immediately adjacent to the building?s main utility transformer and distribution systems. Of particular concern was the very close adjacency of a buried electrical duct bank containing 60 cables with feed circuits totalling in excess of 8,000 amps.
